WHAT’S YOUR TYPE AND HOW DO YOU TREAT IT? RICARDO DINIS, AVEDA GLOBAL ARTISTIC DIRECTOR OF HAIR CUTTING, TELLS ALL.
There’s more to dry hair than meets the eye, and no one knows this better than Ricardo Dinis, Global Artistic Director of Hair Cutting. After treating thousands of dehydrated, depleted tresses, Ricardo discovered the one collection that can treat all kinds of hair textures and needs: Aveda’s hyper-hydrating, superfood-packed Nutriplenish line.
To understand what makes Nutriplenish the be-all, end-all hair hydration hero, we first need to understand more about the dry state of hair. “Hair that is dehydrated and stripped of moisture is depleted of lipids”, Ricardo explains. (Lipids are a part of your hair shaft that help keep it healthy, shiny, manageable and strong.) Dry hair usually lacks shine and softness, tangles easily and can feel rough. Most people lose lipids from chemical damage, shampooing and normal wear and tear.
What is Nutriplenish?
Nutriplenish is Aveda’s newest product line made especially for hydrating hair. This line features a ight shampoo, light conditioner, deep shampoo, deep conditioner, multi-use oil, and a leave-in conditioner spray. Nutriplenish is a hydrating, replenishing collection formulated with super foods for lush, visibly healthy, manageable hair. This line features organic pomegranate oil, mango butter, and coconut oil. What makes these ingredients so great? Pomegranate oil helps hydrate and revitalize dry, depleted hair. Mango butter helps nourish and smooth dry hair. Coconut oil locks in moisture for hydration and softness. You can’t go wrong!
Now that you’re up to speed on the science behind it all, discover what type of dry hair you have and how to dramatically increase hydration using our Nutriplenish collection.
Dry and Damaged Hair
If you’re wondering if dry and damaged hair are the same, they’re not—there are a few differences. Damaged hair has broken strands that are often inconsistent in thickness, as well as split ends that are rough and lighter in color. In contrast, dry hair maintains the same thickness and appearance from root to tip. A dry-and-damaged combo requires extra TLC.
The Treatment:
Ricardo recommends a day-and-night routine to help restore your hair back to life.
PM: For hair with dry ends, Ricardo uses Aveda’s 100% naturally-derived Nutriplenish Multi-Use Hair Oil as an overnight treatment. Before bed, dispense three to four pumps into your hand. Gently massage into dry, unwashed hair from roots to ends, or apply directly to the dry or damaged area. Pro tip: tilt your head from side to side to get the hair off the scalp, and pat the oil into your hair in a downward motion. This will help you avoid a greasy pillowcase.
AM: The next morning, start by shampooing with Nutriplenish Deep Moisture Shampoo. You’ll need the richer butters of this ultra-hydrating shampoo versus the Nutriplenish Light Moisture Shampoo to really pamper your hair. After shampooing, squeeze dry or blot your hair with a towel to rid it of excess moisture. Then apply Aveda’s Nutriplenish Deep Moisture Conditioner from roots to ends. Allow it to sit on hair for three to five minutes. The shea butter will help hydrate, instantly moisturizing your dry, depleted locks. After a minute or so, use a large-tooth comb to detangle hair, working from ends to roots. Rinse your hair. Next, gently towel dry and spray Nutriplenish Leave In Conditioner. Comb through, apply your favorite styling products, and style as you normally would. The Nutriplenish Leave In Conditioner works to protect hair from thermal styling, up to 450 degrees. It also prevents breakage and helps hydrate hair. Finally, after styling, use our Nutriplenish Multi-Use Hair Oil to infuse hair with moisture for a healthy shine.
Dry and Frizzy Hair
Ricardo recommends a few different products depending on your hair’s density and frizz level.
The Treatment:
For all types of hair densities, he likes to start with Nutriplenish Multi-Use Hair Oil as a pre-shampoo. Before you shampoo, dispense two or three pumps into your hand and gently massage into dry, unwashed locks. Start from the ends and work your way up to the roots. Leave this on for five to ten minutes before you shampoo.
Fine-to-Medium Dry, Frizzy Hair
The Nutriplenish Light Moisture Shampoo and Conditioner are best for finer locks. The shampoo cleanses without stripping and moisturizes depleted hair in a flash. For added hair moisture, Ricardo recommends swapping in the Nutriplenish Deep Moisture Conditioner once a week. With 50% more rich butters, the deep formula will provide a dramatic boost of nutrients to help restore hair hydration. If you need a bit more frizz control, comb the Nutriplenish Leave In Conditioner into towel-dried hair, and style as normal.
Coarse-to-Medium Dry, Frizzy Hair:
For coarse-to-medium hair, Ricardo reaches for the Nutriplenish Deep Moisture Shampoo and Conditioner. These rich, vegan formulas contain the more decadent hydration you need, versus the Nutriplenish Light Moisture products. After washing and conditioning your hair, apply the Nutriplenish Multi-Use Hair Oil to seal in moisture. Lightly towel dry your hair and spray Aveda’s Nutriplenish Leave In Conditioner. Gently comb through and style hair as normal. If any frizz remains, Riccardo suggests using another pump of the Nutriplenish Multi-Use Hair Oil: work it through the mid lengths and ends of your hair.
Dry And Colored Hair
Aveda’s beloved Nutriplenish Collection is color-safe, which makes it a perfect match for color-treated tresses.
The Treatment:
Start by shampooing with the Nutriplenish Light Moisture Shampoo. After, Ricardo emphasizes it’s super important to squeeze out as much water from your hair as you can. This gives your hair the best chance to really absorb the replenishing superfoods in the conditioner. Use a towel to blot off the excess moisture. Apply the Nutriplenish Light Moisture Conditioner from roots to end. Ricardo likes to let it sit on the hair for three to five minutes. Pro tip: wrap your head and hair with a hot towel. This trick is meant to further help the conditioner envelope hair strands. After a few minutes, remove the towel and rinse the conditioner out. Finish with the Nutriplenish Leave In Conditioner as a final hydrating step. Spray from mid length to ends and comb through.
If your hair is feeling extra dry, Ricardo loves to add two pumps of Aveda’s Nutriplenish Multi-Use Hair Oil to the Nutriplenish Light Moisture Conditioner.
